edit History
Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves, with vine cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Carménère, brought back from the Bordeaux wine region of France.
All but Carmenere are still planted in Vega Sicilia vineyards to this day, although the dominant grape in the blends is now Tempranillo.
The estate did not develop a reputation before the 20th century when it was acquired by Antonio Herrero. Herrero brought success to Vega Sicilia with a number of awards and an international distribution.
Vega Sicilia changed hands many times over the century, up to 1982 when it was bought by the current owners, the Álvarez family.
Vega Sicilia wines are now considered around the world among the ultimate classic Spanish wines.
